PENN — It is going to cost more to pay to play in the Avon Grove School District next year. The committee charged with student participation fees is recommending that the school district double the fees for participation in extracurricular activities and expand the charges to the middle school
This year was the first for participation fees with a $25 one-time annual fee covering students for all sports they participated in. According to board President Robert Weidenmuller, there have been no noticeable decreases in participation since the fees were put in place.
So far this year, the new fees have raised about $14,000 for the district with another $2,500 expected when spring sports start, to bring the first-year total over $16,000.
With that in mind the committee is recommending the high school participation fee be increased next year to $50, and a new middle school participation fee of $25 be added.
Weidenmuller pointed out that the fees are in line with and often lower than those in other districts in the area. Exceptions are allowed for students who would like to participate but cannot afford the fees. "There were, as the process allowed, four waivers based on very specific student needs," Weidenmuller said.
Facility use fees are also being considered with the task force that has been studying the issue expected to make a recommendation to the board after their March meeting.
Another meeting the board is planning will be to review the Intermediate Unit budgets in detail.
To close out their Feb. 24 meeting the board voted to approve the school calendar for 2011-12 that was the winner in an online survey. The version selected uses spring break for cancellation makeup days beginning with April 2-5. The first student day is scheduled for Aug. 29 with the last school day on June 8.
Board member Bonnie Wolff would have also liked to change the thanksgiving recess. Board member William Pew pointed out that the Monday following Thanksgiving was traditionally a day off because it is the start of hunting season. "Since we've changed our demographics a lot since then I'm not sure it applies to as many people," Wolff said.
